Thanking A Reader

Important, please read this first:

It is LibriVox Policy that we do not allow unasked-for negative criticism of LibriVox recordings. If you want to give feedback to a reader, please only mention the good points. This policy applies to public forum posts as well as private messages (PMs) or emails to readers.

Readers love to get positive feedback. Recording can be a lonely task, and it's nice to know that down the line someone appreciated the work, and enjoyed the recording. Thanking a reader is a lovely thing to do.

Finding the reader's name

Readers can only be contacted via the LibriVox forum.

Note: Readers have 'catalogue names' and 'forum names'(neither of which needs to be the readers 'real-life' name). Sometimes they are the same, sometimes not. In order to write to a reader, you first have to find her/his name.

Finding the reader's catalogue name

(If you remember the catalogue name, skip to the next step.)

  • Go to the book's catalogue page. You can search for it in the catalogue.
  • Scroll down until you find the reader's catalogue name. Copy it.

Finding the reader's forum name

  • Go to the LibriVox catalogue's Search page. In the field "Reader" paste or type in the reader's catalogue name. Click "Search" at the bottom.
  • In the results page that will come up, you may first see a list of "Completed Works" and "Works in Progress." Just scroll down near to the bottom of the page (just above the "Search Again" option) until you come to a line that says "x readers found" (x being a number). Click that name.
  • You'll now get to the reader's page. It shows, at the top, her/his forum name. Underneath you'll find a list of all sections the reader has recorded for LibriVox. If you liked the reader, you may want to bookmark this page! Copy the reader's forum name.

Sending the reader a PM (private message)

Note: you have to be registered on the forum to do this.

  • Go to the forum. At the top, you'll see a number of links. Click on the one in the third row that says 'Log in to check your private messages' (if you're not logged in) or 'You have no/x new messages' (if you're logged in).
  • Click "new post" at the top left. Enter the reader's forum name in the 'user name' field, type a subject, and your message (no negative criticism!). Click "Submit" at the bottom. You've now sent your message.

Other ways of thanking a reader

If you don't want to sent a PM (a private message sent via the forum) to the reader, here are a couple of other things you can do.

Use the "Thank A Reader" link on any catalog page.

All messages are posted to the forum and a PM sent to the reader with a link to the post. For more information about this option visit

Public forum post

Please note that there's no guarantee that the reader will see your post.

Note: you have to be registered on the forum to do this. If you don't want to register, go to 'Other ways of thanking a reader' further down this page.

  • Go to the forum. Scroll down until you get to the "Suggestions, Comments, News & Discussion" forum and click its title.
  • Click "new post" at the top left. Enter subject (something like "Thank you to [reader name]"), and your message (no negative criticism!). Click "Submit" at the bottom. You've now created a new forum post. Other people may post there as well, or the reader may reply.

Sending the reader an email

Note: not all readers publish an email address. If they don't, you may want to send them a PM (see above).

  • Go to the forum. At the top, you'll see a number of links. Click on "Search" in the second row.
  • In the Search Query that comes up, type the reader's forum name in the "Search for Author:" field. Then choose 'Posts' from the "Display results as:" options in the bottom left. Click "Search" at the bottom.
  • You'll get to a page displaying all the forum posts the reader has written. Click on the reader's name on the left; it's a link.
  • You'll now be taken to the reader's profile page. To the left, you'll see a number of contact options. If there is a box next to email, you can click it. If there isn't one, then the reader does not wish for her/his email to be known on the forum. In this case, you may click the "PM" button to send a private message via the forum.

Leaving feedback on the Internet Archive

The Internet Archive hosts all of LibriVox's recordings. They also have a way to leave feedback and rate recordings. - Please note that there's no guarantee that the reader will see your review.

Note: you have to be registered on the Interet Archive to do this.

  • Go to the book's catalogue page. You can search for it in the catalogue.
  • Scroll down to the bullet point list underneath the book summary. Find a link that says "LibriVox’s [Book title] Internet Archive page." Click this link.
  • You'll get to the Internet Archive page of the book. Scroll down to the bottom. To the right, you'll find a link "Write a review." Click it.
